My Travel Story

As an International Relations and Global Studies major, a study abroad program that focuses on various international organizations piqued my interest. Furthermore, France has always been close to me because of my childhood. I was often told stories about my great-great-grandfather, Harold Jay, who was a member of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) during World War One and World War Two. As a member of Britain’s RAMC, Harold helped on the frontlines in Northern France and Belgium. Retracing his steps has become of great interest to me. In addition to his fight in World War One, he was called upon to serve in World War Two because of his great service during the first war. My grandmother told me stories about his expenditures during World War Two as he was her grandpa. He was on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day and was considered, by many in Britain, Britain’s last hope. Substantial ties to the region push me to entertain the thought of retracing his steps in France and being able to explore Europe in the future. After three weeks in Paris, the group that I will be traveling with will be taking a three day excursion to Normandy and the American Cemetery for Soldiers there. This abroad opportunity widens my view on the magnitude of the pressure he was put under. Seeing the growth of the international community in France, I believe Harold would be amazed at the progress in Europe.
