As an undergraduate student pursuing a pre-medical degree that will hopefully get me into medical school a requirement to get in is to have shadowing hours. During shadowing hours a student follows a surgeon everyday learning the trade and techniques needed to pursue a M.D.

My fascination with medicine originated as a kid, due to the fact that I have suffered from a VSD which is a heart defect. Not only am I interested in medicine but I'm very interested in bringing modern medicine to countries that are considered undeveloped.

Recently I have been presented an opportunity from Gap Medics, a program that is dedicated to sending undergraduate students across the world to shadow doctors in different countries. As part of the program I will be heading to the Dominican Republic to shadow a thoracic surgeon (cardia surgeon). Every day for five hours a day I will be able to attend and observe surgies as well as clinical duties.

As an aspiring Cardic Surgeon I will be gaining insight to global health that will enhance my understanding of the clinical environment.  In my free time, I will have the chance to volunteer at a local orphanage, immerse myself in the community, and explore sites of natural beauty and cultural importance. I believe that my time spent in the Dominican Republic will truly foster my growth, both personally and professionally, and could have a major impact on my admission to Baylor Medical School.

I hope to attend the program for three weeks, and the money donated will sponsor the tuition fees and transportation.

Thanks for your consideration!
