Hello my name is Charlotte.

On September 9th 2019 I will be embarking on a once in the life time opportunity. As my University does not offer any placement opportunities to undergraduate students, I have taken it upon myself to to gain some valuable experience in a disadvantaged community.

I will be taking part in an Foundation Mental Health Placement for two months in Sri Lanka. I have chosen to volunteer with an organisation called SLV Global, founded by a group of psychology graduates in 2010. Their main goal was to make a difference in Sri Lanka where the resources are scarce for those living with mental illness.

I have chosen to volunteer in Sri Lanka as they lack psychologists and I would like to help those in need. In Sri Lanka the primary treatment for those suffering from mental health issues is strictly medication. Throughout my University course, I have been taught that medication is not enough on their own to achieve the best outcome, as mental health issues are extremely complicated.

SLV global are trying to eliminate the stigma that surrounds mental illness, by building various resources with the different communities where they work. SLV global work with local professionals in order to help improve the health of those living in the communities. The placement costs £1950 - excluding flights, insurance, visa, vaccinations and transport. This money will go towards training and talks, resources required to provide a substantial and less medicated form of psychological help for those living in these disadvantaged communities.

My placement will consist of seven different weekly projects which can include helping individuals with their recovery process, teaching English to children and adults, helping child development through different activities, and working within the local community

This experience will be challenging but extremely rewarding. It will allow me to gain work experience as well as life experience. I am passionate about working within the mental health sector and improving the well-being of those that are in need.  I feel honoured to have be given this opportunity to work with an organisation that focuses on mental health, whilst allowing me to make a positive impact on someone else's life.
