My Travel Story

So my dad was an immigrant who came to the USA and overstayed his visa. At the time, he stayed back so he can work and send money back home to his parents/ family back in Samoa. Back home his family were fortunate enough to have a roof over their heads but that was about it. They never complained and were happy with what they had, even if dinner for the whole week was just warmed up beef or pig oil with bread fruit or taro. They loved it and my dad still talks about that childhood memory today. He cherishes those moments and continues to teach us about his humble beginnings.

Since my dads been here in the states, he has worked so hard. He worked jobs that paid under the table, to help both his new family (wife & kids) and family back home (parents & siblings). It has been 28 plus years since he’s been back home. Since then, he has lost both parents and a few older siblings, all which he couldn’t attend their funerals due to his immigration status. It hurt to see him grieve and mourn his parents and some of his siblings from afar.

Now that I’m old enough after 28 plus years, I was finally able to help my dad get a permanent residency here in the states. At the age of 57, he can finally work legally. (Which I would rather him not be working anymore but my 1 income cannot afford to keep our bills paid for) Nonetheless, it was the best feeling ever to see him cry tears of joy when he got his permanent residency card. The only trip my dad wanted to take was to go back home to see some of his siblings/family.

Unfortunately for him, he got his green card when Covid hit and traveling internationally was prohibited. In that time, he had lost his job and another sibling back home died due to Covid. The little savings we had saved for his airfare and pocket money were used for more important things like rent and bills and he was ok with that.

Til this day, my dad has yet to use his green card to travel back home to visit his family. This is because our checks just come and go to paying our bills. Cost of living is so high we can’t do anything besides work, sleep (sometimes eat lol) and repeat. My dad is getting older with more pain in his bones and joints. I would really like to get him back home to visit his family. I would appreciate anything, big or small to help get my dad back home to FINALLY see his siblings and family. Thank you and God bless.
