My Travel Story

Studying abroad has always been something I wanted to do. I watched so many of my friends take off on these amazing experiences, but I never got the chance myself.

I love learning so much that after finishing my undergrad in December 2022, I jumped straight into my master’s in Smart and Sustainable Buildings the very next month. Thanks to my professor and now program director, Dr. Park, I found my path in the Civil Engineering department.

But studying abroad? That felt out of reach. I barely saw graduate students taking these opportunities, and with how tight money already is between school and living expenses, I just didn’t think it was possible for me.

That changed when I sat in my Building HVAC Systems and Energy Simulation class and heard Dr. Jiwon Suh present a field study in South Korea. At first, I assumed it was just for undergrads—until she said it was open to graduate students too. I perked up immediately and thought, Oh, I HAVE to go.

This program focuses on Digital Government and Smart Cities in the era of Advanced Technology and AI. We’ll do daily field visits, attend conferences, and even present a project to Jeju government officials. On top of that, we’ll explore universities, museums, research centers, traditional hanoks and palaces, and more. I’ll also get to work with students outside my field and earn a WeGO Sustainable Smart City Champions Certificate.

If there’s one thing about me, it’s that I love learning about different cultures and immersing myself in new experiences. Moving to Dallas was a huge culture shock—but in the best way possible. I’ve expanded my world by trying new foods, learning about different religions, and embracing the cultures of my closest friends. Taking that curiosity even further by studying in South Korea would be life-changing for me—both personally and for my career.

And it gets even better! After the course ends, we have the option to extend our stay. I looked up flights from South Korea to Japan—less than $200! I thought, How could I not take this chance to keep learning? Japan has so many sustainable urban developments, smart buildings, and advanced technology I’ve always wanted to see. And, of course, I have to try authentic Japanese food and experience the culture firsthand.

(I will be paying the days in Japan from my own saved money I made through my part-time internship because being in East Asia already makes that much more possible and accessible. The money from my campaign is only for my study abroad course. Thank you).

This trip is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I would appreciate any support in making it happen. Whether it’s a donation or simply sharing my story, every bit helps me take this next big step.

I promise to share my journey, post pictures, and bring back everything I learn. Thank you so much for supporting me!
