Hello everyone!

My name is Gaby and I have created this page in order to collect donations to fund a volunteering trip to a conservation centre for marine turtles in Montezuma, Costa Rica. I have recently been awarded a scholarship from the University of Edinburgh in order to participate in the project: however, the award consists only of £350, which only covers accommodation and project fees. Donations collected on this site will be used to pay my travel expenses and flights.

But first, let me tell you more about the project. 

Costa Rica is a country well-known for its wildlife and natural diversity. Unfortunately, however, marine turtles are a critically endangered species and urgent action needs to be taken if the species is to be preserved in future years. While the disappearance of turtles is due to multiple reasons such as climate change, fishing practices, and illegal hunting and trading of turtles, tourism is the most threatening factor contributing to this situation, as developing infrastructures and a greater traffic in the beaches have displaced the population of turtles and have prevented their spawn in recent occasions.

The project I will be taking part in operates in a manifold way to ensure the protection of these species in light of these transformations and developments. The main task for volunteers is to patrol the beaches and collect eggs from turtles to place into hatcheries, where they will be protected from human and natural threats. Once the eggs have hatched, volunteers release the baby turtles into the sea where these will return to their families. During this process, volunteers also facilitate the gathering of scientific data, so that new conservation strategies can be developed by understanding the behavioural patterns of turtles. Similarly, the project has an educational component and is imbricated in the local community: volunteers run lectures and activities in local schools to raise awareness regarding the preservation of the environment in the area. With this same purpose, tourists are equally welcome to take part in the project and visit the facilities.

Taking part in this project means a lot to me on a number of levels. I have been involved for many years with the protection of animals and the environment, and with social justice and responsibility (both on a personal and an academic level, and also as a volunteer and an activist). More importantly, participation in this project means a lot for those living creatures whose lives are deeply affected by our actions. I believe that as people, tourists, and consumers we should strive to do our best in order to preserve the environment and the species in this planet. In Costa Rica, the conservation of turtles relies, fundamentally, on the work of volunteers who not only put an effort in protecting these animals in the present, but also educate others in order to ensure their future preservation.

I have resorted to crowdfunding because at the moment I am devoting all of my income to paying for my postgraduate degree--I have been studying and working at two simultaneous jobs for the past year.  With a bit of help, however, I will hopefully be able to take this great opportunity and use my time to help endangered animals and make a contribution to the local community in Costa Rica.

Part of the requirements to benefit from the scholarship involve the creation of a blog about your travel experience. This means I will be keeping you updated with pictures, videos and stories about the project and its marine inhabitants.

Me llamo Gaby y he decidido crear esta página para recaudar donaciones para poder financiar un viaje de voluntariado a un centro de conservación de tortugas marinas en la playa de Montezuma, Costa Rica. Hace poco he recibido una beca de la Universidad de Edimburgo para poder participar en el proyecto: sin embargo, la ayuda consiste únicamente en £350, las cuales destinaré para pagar alojamiento y tasas de participación en el proyecto. Las donaciones recaudadas a través de este sitio serán utilizadas para poder financiar el vuelo hasta Costa Rica y el desplazamiento a las instalaciones del centro.

Antes de nada, me gustaría contaros un poco más acerca del proyecto.

Costa Rica es un país conocido por su naturaleza y biodiversidad. Sin embargo, muchas de sus especies, entre ellas las tortugas marinas, se hallan en peligro crítico de extinción. Aunque la desaparición de estos animales se debe a muchos factores (como el cambio climático, la pesca local, y a la caza y contrabando ilegal de las propias tortugas), el turismo es el factor más importante en la degradación medioambiental de la zona, ya que tanto el desarrollo de infraestructuras (hoteles y resorts) como el cada vez más abundante tráfico en las playas han resultado en el desplazamiento de las poblaciones de tortugas en la zona, llegando incluso a prevenir su desove en recientes ocasiones.

El proyecto en el que participaré opera en torno a diversas estrategias para asegurar la protección de las tortugas teniendo en cuenta las amenazas y transformaciones en la biosfera local anteriormente mencionadas. Las tareas principales de los voluntarios consisten en la patrulla nocturna de playas para recoger los huevos de las tortugas y el traslado de dichos huevos a viveros, donde son protegidos de depredadores naturales, y de la intervención humana. Tras la eclosión de los huevos, las tortugas neonatas son devueltas a las playas, donde regresaran al mar para reunirse con sus familias. Durante el proceso, los voluntarios también facilitan la toma de datos científicos que permitan desarrollar nuevas estrategias de conservación. Por otra parte, el proyecto desarrolla una importante labor educativa dentro de la comunidad local, llevando a cabo charlas y actividades en colegios para fomentar la preservación del medio ambiente en la zona.

Participar en este proyecto supone mucho para mí por muchas razones. Desde hace años me he involucrado en organizaciones que promueven la concienciación con el bienestar animal, la responsabilidad social y la ecología, bien a través de mi trabajo como voluntaria o como activista. No obstante, para quien de verdad importa el proyecto es para aquellos animales cuyas vidas dependen de nuestras acciones. Creo firmemente que como personas, turistas y consumidores debemos hacer los esfuerzos que podamos para preservar el medio ambiente y las especies con las que vivimos. En Costa Rica, la conservación de las tortugas marinas depende fundamentalmente del trabajo de los voluntarios que hoy aseguran la protección de esta especie y educacan en generar conciencia medioambiental para su preservación futura.

He decidido recurrir a crowdfunding ya que, en este momento, todos mis ingresos se ven destinados al pago de mis estudios de máster (desde hace un año he compaginado mis estudios con dos trabajos simultáneos para poder financiar mi educación). Con vuestra ayuda, por suerte, espero poder beneficiarme de esta enorme oportunidad y poder usar mi tiempo y esfuerzo en ayudar a estos animales en peligro y contribuir a la comunidad local en Montezuma, Costa Rica.
