My Travel Story

As a teacher of students with special needs, it is important to be creative in your teaching. I am currently doing a study on the benefits of social stories and video modeling in the classroom, which is utilizing pictures and videos of students to connect mastery of learning.  Video modeling is a creative practice that benefits all students, by utilizing technology in the classroom to reinforce positive behavior, understanding, and mastery of skills. Social Stories partner with this project, because they are personalized stories created with a specific learning goal.

In receiving positive results from the student's functional life skill aquiration, I have decided to take a year off to explore and learn around the world. As I learn around the world, I will be sharing my learning, and educating my students on various cultures and environmental issues. Through this adventure, I plan to record for my video blog, www.missraraventures.com, which will help educate others on various forms of environmental work, and inspire others to do their part to help the environment.

In the span of 9 months, I will be visiting 15 countries around the world: China, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Brazil, South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Hungary, Switzerland, France, Spain, Italy, Albania, Greece, and India. I will be teaching or volunteering at each country through various outlets. Each country will have a designated environmental issue and teaching goal that will be documented through culminating video blogs and lesson plans that focus on topics such as organic farming, cultural identity, smog pollution, wildlife preservation, and deforestation.  Video blogs will include lesson plans/materials, social stories, and activity examples that other teachers and families can use to educate their child, or students.

The goal of this trip is to increase my student's awareness, global engagement, and understanding of the world around them, as well as the importance of preserving culture and nature. This will make a difference in their local community of Newark, because they will educate others about helping the environment. It will impact the Newark district, as well as other partners in my school and through my travels.

As a teacher, my sole goal is to empower our future leaders to be a part of saving and changing the world in a positive way. I believe that everyone can work together to save the world through education and collaboration. Teaching and the environment are my passions, and in choosing these destinations and creating this project, I plan to educate and inspire others to help save the world!
