My Travel Story

Hi everyone! My name is Tae'Yanni and I'm going to be traveling to the Philippines this summer in a study abroad program to further my education in getting my bachelors degree as well as further completing my major of Criminal Justice by documenting the challenges survivors of human trafficking in the Philippines have faced and helping out around the cities by getting hands on experience on how they live. We will be planting rice, giving back to the homeless, hearing the experiences from youth survivors, and learning about the history of the Philippines by visiting the ruins such as the Baclayon Church. I am very passionate about this project because it goes into detail about real world situations that need resolving and to be discussed more. It's also a way for me to educate myself as well as give back to the communities that need it. This destination was chosen not only because of how it looks, but because of the respectable cultures within the Philippines such as the cultural dances Tinikling or Subli. This is a meaningful experience for me because when I return I will be able to inform my family and friends of everything I learned, so that Filipino culture can be spread throughout and we as Americans can have a better understanding of traditions/cultures we see as different. It is also meaningful to me because I will be able to provide a comfortable space for survivors while also learning from them and being able to share my own knowledge if they would like to learn as well. This trip is a great lesson for me and allow for acceptance of differences from a different country than my own.
