This trip will not only further my education in the Spanish language, but also my knowledge of the Dominican culture, and more importantly help to teach children the English language. May of 2022 I will graduate from Kent State University with a degree in Spanish. This volunteer experience will allow me to practice and improve my use of the Spanish language by immersing me in the language and culture. I hope to one day open a Spanish immersion school in the US and teach American children the importance and benefits of being multilingual and multicultural. Volunteering with The Esperanza Project will place me with a host family, employ me to teach English to the local children, and allow me to be immersed in the Spanish language and Dominican culture to further my knowledge and skills. Teaching these children English expands their opportunities to succeed in life, both in their country and all around the world. I have always loved working with children and learning about the Spanish language and culture, and this volunteer experience allows me to fulfill both.
