My Travel Story

by: Jade Higgins Start Date: Sep 10, 2020 - End Date: Jan 9, 2021
As many of you will know, I’m currently in the middle of my Veterinary Nursing degree which has been postponed a year. This is due to not been able to start my placement in a Veterinary Practice until June 2021 because of Covid-19. It has been an extremely frustrating situation, but I wanted to make a negative into a positive.
So, I thought instead of losing a year of education I would sign myself up to go somewhere I’ve always dreamed of going and working, in hope that I could have a little help from my family and friends.
This experience would benefit my career as it involves working alongside a vet out in the bush and other animal care centres in the Louis Trichardt town of South Africa, allowing me to perform veterinary procedure's on species such as rhino, lion, antelope and buffalo.
The other half of my trip involves mass capture and relocation of wildlife in Botswana to help maintain genetic diversity on wildlife reserves and to prevent inbreeding. This is more conservation work, but it is still something I strongly follow and would love to say I’ve been involved in. I would be working alongside a wide range of ungulate species, including; antelope, giraffe, buffalo and zebras.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and I hope it has encouraged you to help me succeed in following my dreams.
