14.000 Sea miles of School to learn for Life
My Travel Story
My name is Marietta and I am 16 years old. I live with my parents, my sister and our dog Lana in a very small village in Lower Saxony. I want to protect the oceans. I am sea crazy. And I'm serious about it. By the way: since I was eight years old.
So...let me tell you more about my goal and what I need your help for;-):
Ever since I was little, I've loved the sea, the vastness, the diversity...just everything. My parents always said: Marietta feels more comfortable in the water than on land. Since I was eight years old, it has been clear to me that I would study marine biology and later live somewhere on the coast.
That's why the subjects that excite me most at school are biology and English. I would say I already know quite a bit about the sea. However, I learned this from Robert Marc Lehmann and his lectures, as well as from books I got for my birthday - and not at school!
My biggest concern is marine and species conservation, because the ocean is super important for us humans and the 10 million or so animal species in the sea.
Now back to my goal: Ocean College, which I'm going to tell you about now, is a huge opportunity for me to learn meaningful things about the ocean and the world and to further develop my personality. Unfortunately, normal schools don't do that. But I want to learn to be even stronger, more determined and open-minded so that I can do my job as a marine biologist really, really well later on and thus give something, make a difference.
Ocean College offers a so-called summer school, which I was able to take part in for a fortnight in September 2021 with 30 other young people. We were on the Pelican of London, an old three-master, on the Baltic and North Sea. I got a little insight into life on a sailing ship and learned a lot about the sea. Since then I dare to speak English and I have outgrown myself. In such a short time! I looked forward to it for almost a year... and when I was there, I blossomed.
Ocean College offers a 6-month "Year Abroad on a Sailing Ship" alongside the Summerschool. 30 young, ambitious students cross the Atlantic together, learn everything they need in English; they master tough challenges such as 6-metre-high waves, overcome fears, get to know foreign cultures and cook food for 40 people in a 6 m2 kitchen. They learn what is really important in life: Cohesion, being brave, believing in themselves, being curious and that they are always just a part of this world. Of course, the whole thing is also a lot of fun.
In October, I applied for Ocean College 2022/2023 and received - what a Christmas surprise - the acceptance on Christmas Eve. Now I am the happiest girl in the world, because I got this chance. And I'm going to use it!
The participation costs 25,000 euros. I'm trying to get a part of it here. I save almost all my pocket money and work. I'm also looking for sponsors with the help of my godmother and parents. And if you think my project is worthwhile and great and would like to support me, I would be really happy. Every little bit brings me a little bit closer to Ocean College. It is my very big dream!
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me and my goals.
Thank you for your support
Yours, Marietta :)
