My Travel Story

by: Debbie Afflu Start Date: Jun 2, 2025 - End Date: Jun 21, 2025
Hi, I’m Debbie! I am going to Zanzibar City to volunteer and support local NGOs with community and school-based initiatives for 2 weeks, and would really appreciate your support in making that happen!

Having recently completed my undergraduate studies in International Social and Public Policy and Economics at the London School of Economics, I’m driven by a desire to make a positive impact on the world and have done that through volunteering with charities who work with young people, mental health and raising awareness about sickle cell. I've taken up opportunities to promote positive change at my university and in my local community and now, I want to take that further and go and volunteer abroad.

Throughout my time at university, I’ve enjoyed learning about global issues, the complexities of development, and how effective policies can drive real change. I’ve been actively involved in student leadership, campaigning for change, and advocating for underrepresented voices in my role at the Students’ Union. Now, I’m excited to take both my knowledge and experiences and put them into practice in this volunteering opportunity.

Having worked in two UK-based charities, supporting campaigns through my Students’ Union role, and organising events as President of the LSESU African-Caribbean Society and in my church community, I've gained practical skills in community building, fundraising and supporting my surrounding communities. I hope to bring this experience to support local NGOs, supporting their work and learning from their experiences, while also focusing on sustainable change and having positive impact on the local communities they support.

I look forward to learning, growing, and contributing positively to the local community in Zanzibar City. I’m ready to bring my skills, passion for people, and open mind to support impactful work that aligns with Tanzania's development goals — from improving access to education and fostering youth empowerment, to promoting sustainable change and strengthening community resilience. This journey will enable me to leave a positive mark on the communities I have the privilege of working with and help people who need it the most.

Your support will help me turn this vision into reality and allowing me to be part of meaningful projects that align with my values and aspirations. Thank you for helping me take this next step in my journey to make a difference!
