My Travel Story

by: Suzanne Hacker Start Date: Feb 2, 2020 - End Date: Apr 11, 2020
The extent of the recent wildfires in Australia were devastating to much of the land and impacted so many of the wildlife.  While looking for a volunteer opportunity, I came across a trip to Australia to help in a wildlife sanctuary.  Continuing to research, I kept coming back to the need there in Australia.

Originally looking to just volunteer for 1 week, it became apparent that the right decision was to go for 2 weeks because the trip cost is the same whether I go for 1 or 2 weeks.  The wildfires were less than 5 km away from the sanctuary I am headed to and they had to evacuate staff and animals for 2 months.  They are just now bringing the animals home.  I will be helping build fire blocks and fences and helping to feed and take care of the animals that have been returned to their home at the sanctuary.

  • Early Morning Phone Call!

Early morning phone call today to discuss questions and details with my volunteer coordinator. Thinking of the fact that Australia is 17 hours ahead. Which means my 6:00 am phone call was 11:00 pm in Australia.
