My Travel Story

Hi! My name is Julie Zhou. Studying abroad presents a new opportunity to explore myself and business marketing as a healthy way to understand more, take risks, and struggle. My interests lie in fashion, music, and art. Art consumes my life in the best way possible, whether it be dressing up for class every day, supporting local music artists in Raleigh, or leading as set design director for Platform Magazine. Platform being NC State’s fashion and culture magazine managed by students to showcase the voices and artistic ability of our school and the wolfpack. Art is not just school, work, or play, rather all three culminated into a passion I've had as early as I could remember. These past years have only solidified my interests and actively connected me to other talented creatives throughout these industries. If such is possible in Raleigh, I can only hope for further development as an artist and individual in a place like Reims, France. Being a renowned city with close proximity to Paris, studying here would allow me to accomplish three goals: better marketing skills, establishing international connections, and self-assuredly navigating life in a place culturally different from my own. Interpersonally, the emphasis on understanding markets and their impacts through globalization are present in my life as I seek out obscure or growing trends in fashion and music around the world. Knowing more specifically about what and how trends are influenced globally and locally is a big motivator for my interest in study abroad. Living in a foreign place blesses you with experience regarding people and culture, but to study there would allow me more in-depth comprehension of Western European markets as a model for global markets. Professionally, this program could mark another pivotal moment in my development as a creative and intellectual. To make and consume art is one thing but to understand the how and why of business workings is invaluable to me as a future business woman. After being accepted into NC State's study abroad program, studying in a place with different values can seem daunting but I’m up for the challenge in order to become more confident and knowledgeable in what I do, no matter where I go.
