Hi, I am Birdie, a 47-year-old macro focused social worker committed to creating systemic change in a country that has a long way to go at championing human rights. As I work toward completing my Master of Social Work in the next year, at Portland State University, I have the opportunity to study abroad for two weeks in the cities of Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Malmo this summer in August 2026.  My goal is to deepen my understanding of harm reduction among sex workers, observe legal frameworks, social services, and global anti-trafficking strategies in port cities.

The program is: "Denmark, Sweden & The Netherlands: Copenhagen, Malmo & Amsterdam - Human Trafficking & Sex Work: A Harm Reduction Approach." The program was started in 2013 and has been going strong with PSU instructor, Dr. Christopher Carey.  We will listen to speakers from the Sex Works Interest Organization, the Red Van, and the Street Lawyers. I live in Portland — a port city in a country where human trafficking remains an epidemic. My education is not just personal; it is purposeful. Studying abroad will equip me with international perspectives and evidence-based strategies that I can bring back to strengthen policy, advocacy, and community-level solutions here at home.

As someone with lived experience of sexual assault, I am committed to transforming pain into policy change and prevention from a person centered and harm reduction perspective. This program will directly support my goal of working at the macro level — influencing systems, laws, and institutions so survivors are protected and exploitation is reduced before it happens.  Your donation will go directly toward tuition and travel expenses related to this program. Every contribution moves me closer to graduation in 2027 and closer to building safer communities. If you’re unable to give financially, sharing this campaign is another meaningful way to support my journey.

Thank you for believing in the more beautiful world we know is possible, systemic change, and survivor-led leadership.
