My Travel Story

by: BlancaMarina Grant Rivera Start Date: Nov 30, 2024 - End Date: Nov 29, 2025
Hello, my name is BlancaMarina and I’m a non-binary, Boricua fiber artist living in Puerto Rico. While I spent most of my life studying music, I recently shifted my creative focus to fiber arts—a medium that has allowed me to express myself in ways I never imagined especially in these times. Through crocheting, knitting, and other fiber techniques, I’ve found a way to bring beauty, connection, and more meaning to the world around me.

Life has been a constant uphill climb. As someone who is disabled and caring for my disabled mother, I’ve faced significant barriers, from financial struggles to systemic discrimination and racism. Despite it all, I’ve channeled these challenges into my art, creating work that tells stories of resilience, hope, and the power of community.

But right now, I’m stuck. I don’t have a car, and this single barrier is holding me back from reaching my full potential. Without reliable transportation, I can’t access vending venues to share and sell my work, attend fiber art shows, or even manage essential daily needs like grocery shopping and medical appointments. A reliable vehicle would not only help me expand my career but also provide stability for my mom and me.

Why Your Support Matters:

• Breaking Barriers: With a car, I can reach vending events, fiber art fairs, and creative opportunities that are currently out of reach. This will allow me to grow my income and share my work with more people.

• Building Community: My art isn’t just about self-expression; it’s about connection. I work directly with the community and fiber arts, with their warmth and tactile nature, have a way of bringing people together. I aim to use my work to create spaces where people feel seen and valued.

• Caring for Family: Reliable transportation will allow me to better support my disabled mother, ensuring she can access her appointments and daily needs with ease.

Why This Means Everything to Me:

Although my journey began in music, transitioning to fiber arts has felt like coming home. Fiber arts are tactile, grounding, and deeply connected to tradition and community. They’ve become a way for me to turn hardship into something beautiful, something I can share with others.

This campaign isn’t just about getting a car; it’s about reclaiming my independence and pursuing a life where my art can flourish. It’s about giving myself the tools to keep creating, supporting my family, and serving others through my craft.

Thank you for considering this. Every donation, every share, and every word of encouragement helps me move closer to my goal of building a stable and sustainable life through my art.

With gratitude and hope,
BlancaMarina
