My Travel Story

by: Vanessa Venyo Start Date: Aug 12, 2025 - End Date: Dec 26, 2025
My name is Vanessa, and I am a 19-year-old freshman and full-time college student with a 3.9 GPA. I recently completed my pre-nursing courses, and this fall, I'll be partaking in a once-in-a-lifetime semester abroad—6 weeks in Kyoto, Japan, and 6 weeks in Cape Town, South Africa. I will be aborad for nearly 3 months.

As a healthcare worker and future nurse, I believe that cultural awareness makes us better caregivers. Traveling will allow me to immerse myself in the customs, traditions, and histories of two vibrant cities in the world, helping me grow into a more empathetic and well-rounded person—something that will benefit every patient I care for in the future.

This trip is extremely personal for me. I am a sickle cell warrior who has faced countless hospital stays and life-threatening health episodes. There were moments when I wasn’t sure if I would even make it to college, let alone have the chance to study abroad. But God has opened doors I never imagined possible—He provided a way for me to attend college, and now, this incredible opportunity to see more of His creation.

I chose Japan because I’ve always been captivated by its beauty—from Kyoto’s bamboo forests and serene temples to the bustling streets of Tokyo. As a matcha lover, visiting Uji will be a dream come true lol. I chose Cape Town for its breathtaking landscapes, lively culture, and music that connects deeply with my own African roots as a first-generation Ghanaian. I can’t wait to hike Table Mountain, go bungee jumping, and try Biltong!

This journey is 100% self-funded, and I’m working hard to make it happen—but I still need help to close the gap. Your support will directly help cover my program fees, housing, and meals. Every dollar brings me closer to not only experiencing these incredible cultures but also returning home with knowledge, stories, and inspiration to share.

From this experience, I plan to give back by:

Taking over my university’s study abroad social media to share my journey in real time.
Presenting at my university's Study Abroad Fair to encourage other students—especially those with chronic illnesses—to pursue their dreams.
Showing fellow sickle cell warriors that their condition does not have to limit the life they live.

Life is fleeting, and tomorrow isn’t promised. This is my chance to embrace the world fully, grow in my calling as a nurse, and remind others that no matter your circumstances, you can live a bold, joy-filled life.

Any contribution, no matter the amount, would mean the world to me. Thank you for believing in my journey and helping me make this dream a reality. May God bless you :)
