The National Student Leadership Conference Forensic Summer Camp at American University teaches skills like fingerprint and DNA analysis, crime scene simulation and skeletal Identification, that I can apply to my future classes, as well as a career in forensics or forensic anthropology.

I am excited to have this experience and learn new things. I am also nervous and excited about being away from home for an entire week and a half. I have not been away from my family for that long but I think it will be a great opportunity to gain independence and grow as my own person, away from what I know. I want to learn about the science behind the criminal investigations I’ve seen on my favorite shows - Bones and Criminal Minds. I like learning about the bones and the way that our bodies move. I studied a lot about bones in dance, so I think I will be good at analyzing what has happened to a body or corpse. I also like that you can look at a skull and from that a human face will form that you can sketch.
I’m also learning how to use a spreadsheet to track funding and expenses, as well as shopping at thrift and resale stores for clothes to wear to field trips.

When I get home, I would like to use my skills in next year’s classes. And with the leadership skills I hope to learn, I will use them in my life - like volunteering at Invention Camp. I also think skills like stress and time management will help me support other kids who get stressed about classes, grades and feeling excluded or being different. I will also be writing thank you letters to everyone who helped fund me, and interacting with my local crime community.
