My Travel Story

by: tiree dunn Start Date: Nov 22, 2023 - End Date: Aug 21, 2024
I have chosen to attend a volunteer program in Thailand involving environmental conservation and rehabilitation. I chose this as it closely relates to my future goals and University degree next year of BSc Environmental management. The project involves organising and actively contributing towards beach clean-ups and mangrove restoration. I aim to encourage the local community to get involved through hosting small classes to young students to educate on the importance of protecting and conserving the local environment. Mangrove restoration is essential in this area of Thailand to protect the local coastline from flooding. Over the last decade, nearly 100,000 hectares or 6% of the world’s mangrove forests have been destroyed. This leads to low-income vulnerable areas such as communities in Hau Hin to be at a greater risk to damaging flooding. This trip will enrich my passion for the environment and give me a unique perspective on the real-life struggles against the changing world to aid in my education and future career. I want to make a real difference in the community by offering my help to society with whatever is needed such as mangrove planting or environmental education.
This trip is being funded by my part time just but alongside A levels this is a lot to take on and im unable to work as much due to my exams.
I have always loved travel but Southeast Asia has always been a dream destination of mine but to be able to go there in a way that makes it more sustainable, environmentally friendly and meaningful.
