My Travel Story

by: Chloé Perez Start Date: Jan 3, 2020 - End Date: Apr 20, 2020
Hello ! My name is Chloé, I'm French and I am turning 21 in around 100 days.
I study English Culture and Civilization in Utrecht University, in the Netherlands.

I always liked speaking English, and moving to the Netherlands was a big opportunity for me for speaking and improving in English on a daily basis. I live in a giant student-house, with more than 60 exchange students! We are all from a different country and I got to know them and their culture. What convinced me to volunteer abroad was the idea to dive even deeper into a completely different country, and to leave the comfort zone that Europe represented for me.

This summer, during 4 to 8 weeks, I will volunteer in 3 different programs in Indonesia and Malaysia:
  1. Stray Dog Shelter and Rehabilitation Centre, in Ubud (Indonesia)
  2. Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Centre, in Tabanan (Indonesia)
  3. Orangutan Conservation Sanctuary, in Perak (Malaysia)

  • Why a Stray Dog Shelter ? What Will I Do in Ubud ?
If you ever travelled and mostly through Asia, you must have seen many stray dogs, wandering in the streets. It was trully heartbeaking to see them, malnourished, covered in fleas or even injured.
I will volunteer in the shelter with the aim of rescuying and rehabilitating dogs so they may be ready for adoption by a caring family.

My tasks will be to:
- walk, feed, clean the dogs and their
- socialize with the dogs, make them adoption ready
- educate pet owners on overpopulation of stray dogs and talk about neutering

  • Why a Wildlife Centre ? What Will I Do in Tabanan ?
The Wildlife Centre take care of animals victims of the deforestation, but not only. Some were also victims of traffickers. The primates and birds of the centre have been rescued from markets or private homes, where they were kept as pets for entertainment. Over 40 of the rescued animals were considered endangered. I will also have to take part in additional projects such as beach cleans.

My tasks will be to:

- clean and maintain the enclosures
- feed the animals
- do some maintenance work

  • Why a OrangUtan Sanctuary ? What Will I Do in Perak ?
Due to loss of habitat, pollution, and illegal poaching, a lot of species in Malaysia are on the Red List (Critically Endangered) and fating extinction. The program aims to promote conservation of the animals through awareness campaigns and rehabilitation. The main idea is to protect and preserve orangutans from extinction.

My tasks will be to:

- participate in the husbandry
- do some construction and maintenance work
- be a pseudo staff member and help wherever the need will arise

Not only I will do volunteer work, but during my free time I will have the amazing opportunity of exploring these two country, observe incredible animals, visit wonderful places, temples, mosques, and experience a very different culture and way of life.

I will also send you a very pretty postcard (10 and below) or a cute souvenir (20 and up) if you help me! Just hit me up on my Instagram @khloeperezz !

Merci Beaucoup,
Chloé
