My name is Mihai Daniel, I am 26 years old, and I am in my third year of medical school in Romania, Europe. Becoming a doctor has been my lifelong dream, a mission to help others, but now I am on the verge of losing everything. I need to pay half of my tuition fee – €1,900 ($1,958 / 9,500 RON) – by the end of March, or I will be expelled and left homeless. This is my last hope.

Until recently, I worked night shifts as a cashier in a supermarket, barely managing to cover my tuition and dormitory expenses. My parents helped whenever they could, but they too were struggling. In December, my life took a tragic turn.

First, I was laid off in mid-December due to staff reductions. The company was forced to cut jobs because of Romania’s worsening economic crisis. I lost my only source of income overnight.

Then, at the end of December, my parents were killed in a horrific car accident. A reckless driver lost control on the road, crashing directly into their small car. The impact was fatal for my parents and for that driver too, ending up with me losing both my parents in an instant.

Despite my grief, I spent January and February desperately searching for a new job. Every day I applied, hoping to find something – anything – to support myself. I was even scammed by an employer who promised to pay me after the probation period, only to fire me without warning, refuse my salary, and insult me when I asked for my rightful wages.

My parents were simple workers, earning the minimum wage, and we never owned a home. After their deaths, I had nothing left – no savings, no inheritance, no family to turn to. My grandparents passed away when I was a teenager. Unfortunately, I am completely alone.

I tried reaching out to Romanian institutions for help, but my pleas were met with silence. The system is broken, and students like me are left to fend for themselves.

Medicine is more than just a career for me – it is my purpose. I refuse to give up, but I cannot do this alone. If I fail to pay by the end of March, I will be expelled and evicted from my dorm. I will have nowhere to go.
