My Travel Story

Hi everyone!
My name is Danica, and I’m a first-grade teacher based in Baltimore, Maryland. I’m beyond excited to share that in August 2025, I’ll be traveling to Palawan, Philippines to teach through a program with International Volunteer HQ!

Choosing the Philippines for this journey was an easy decision for me. My grandfather grew up there, surrounded by his family, before eventually moving to the United States. I grew up hearing wonderful stories about the warmth of Filipino culture and the strong sense of community. Ever since, it’s been a dream of mine to visit and connect with my roots.

Some of my favorite stories from my grandfather were about his school days—how his parents, aunts, and uncles were also his teachers. That legacy of education left a lasting impression on me and helped shape my own dream of becoming a teacher. Now, I have the incredible opportunity to continue that legacy by teaching in the same country where my great-grandparents once taught. It truly feels like a full-circle moment, and I couldn’t be more honored.

This mission trip is not just a chance to share my love for teaching—it's also a meaningful step toward my future goals. I’m currently planning to pursue a Master’s degree in Reading and English Language Development so I can better support students who are learning English as a second language. Since Tagalog is widely spoken in the Philippines, this experience will give me valuable insight into working with multilingual learners.

As I prepare for this amazing journey, I would be so grateful for any support you can offer. Every contribution—big or small—will make a difference in the lives of the children I’ll be teaching, and in my own journey as an educator.

Thank you so much for your kindness and support!
