About Me

I was born in Veracruz Mexico on march 1993. Since the age of 3, I showed my passion for dance and the performing arts. My parents say that I would play with my siblings, Ana, Tere and Yubal to be dancers and we would put up shows for the family. However, my dance training did not begin until I was 13. It was in middle-school where I joined the mexican folk dance team. I was attracted to it by the colors of the costumes and the fact that the team had the opportunity to perform around the city for different social and cultural events. By the time, I also developed a deep interest in other cultures and traveling. So, I decided to learn english and french. The classes were very expensive and I was about to quit since my parents could not afford them. However, my dedication helped me get a scholarship at the institute. The opportunity to go abroad came at the age of 16. I discovered a wonderful education program: The United World Colleges. This is an educational organization that seeks peace and sustainable development by bringing youth from different countries and backgrounds to study, live and work together in one of its 13 campuses around the world. This opportunity approached me to other cultures. I was fascinated by other performing arts forms, the kabuki theater from japan and ukrainian dance, just to mention some. I had the chance to continue my dance training during those 2 years and to explore the ways I could use my passions to help my community. In 2011, after having finished two years of intense personal growth and learning, I entered university at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, where I decided to major in theater and dance. The spirit of civic engagement and multiculturalism that I could breath at Macalester only empowered me even more to use my passion for dance to create groups of support for youth and children in the communities I am part of. This is to help them grow in a healthy way, so they can continue making this world a better place, little by little. I am currently a teaching contemporary dance at an academy in Veracruz and also teach private english and french classes. I have been accepted into the Semester At Sea program and have received three scholarships, one of them, the IMPACT scholarship. This one will allow me to do service projects in communities of 11 different countries such as Japan, China, Vietnam, India, South Africa, Ghana and others. I want to participate in this program because I will take classes that will teach me about world dances, global peace and the human-earth relationship as well as skills to analyze and compare the problems countries face through the core course Global Studies. I want to share the experiences and knowledge earned at SAS with children and youth from my community after I finish this program. I will do it for free as a way to honor and thank all the people who supported me in my higher education.
