About Me

In August, I’m lucky enough to be traveling to Tanzania to volunteer for 2 weeks! I will be working in schools and in the community to help teach English. The schools are drastically under resourced with insufficient classrooms, teachers and materials, whilst the elderly in the community are fairly illiterate, as a result of being expected to tend livestock and land instead of receiving a formal education. Within the schools, it’s the law that secondary school lessons must be taught in English, however unfortunately a lot of the children struggle with the language, let alone the education/ subject, especially with a very limited range of resources to hand. By volunteering, I’ll be able to help provide extra staffing, helping to reduce the large ratio of staff to students, whilst implementing teaching ideas and help fund for resources. African Impact also offers a free Literacy and English program to the Maasai tribe, allowing them to build up their English. The placement itself is costing £650, excluding flight and vaccination costs. This money is used to pay for my basic accommodation and meals but the large majority is feeding straight back into the funding for the schools, which are hugely under resourced. I therefore am hoping to raise £500 to help contribute to this cost. I am sure we can all agree that we take for granted the excellent quality of resources, teaching and access we have available in the UK, and I cannot imagine the difficulty of having to be taught in a language that is not my own. I would be incredibly grateful for any contributions or the spread of word. You can find out more about the work of African Impact here; http://www.africanimpact.com .
