About Me

My name is Kayley Smith and I am a first year DVM student at the Atlantic Veterinary Collage, in Prince Edward Island, Canada. My career goal as a veterinarian is to work in ecosystem health, with a special interest in public health and the management of emerging and infectious diseases. I want to work internationally in order to assist other countries, and am thrilled to have the opportunity to gain international veterinary experience so early in my career. I believe this program would provide me the opportunity to grow professionally and to experience how veterinary medicine can benefit other cultures. I have been involved in research projects previously during my undergraduate education; one included spending three months working in a herb medicine research lab at Shaanxi Normal University in Xi’an, China. I am looking forward to seeing the contrasting culture between Indonesia, Thailand, and my previous experiences. I have also worked on a project at the Salmonier Nature Park in Newfoundland, where I worked with the social behavior of little brown bats; as well as a project with European Starlings at Saint Mary’s University, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I am looking forward to applying these previous experiences, as well as my clinical veterinary work to the ASEAN program. I am proud to represent Canada in this amazing opportunity, and can’t wait to learn about the culture and local veterinary philosophies of the participating Asian nations.
