About Me

Hello! My name is Phyllis and my friends here in the Philippines call me Vern. To tell you a little bit about myself, I grew up in SOS Kinderdorf. It is a non-governmental organization that helps children that are abandoned, neglected, and abused and provide them the basic needs that a child needs. In the year 1997, 6th day of May, I was surrendered together with my 2 brothers in the said institution by my biological mother. That time I was a year old while my other siblings were 3 and 5 years old. I have lived in SOS Kinderdorf for 21 years. I grew up with considered friends that later on turn into a family. I have studied in a private school during my elementary and middle school level. Being on that school gave me the experience to be with children that are well off and has a complete support and a family. There are a lot of instances that I am bullied from being an orphan but it never stopped me from being an outstanding student. It gave me more strength and power to stand up and fight for my dreams. In the year 2011 was the year of my awakening from the reality. With the luck and great effort that I have rendered, I had the chance to be an exchange student in Japan for a month. I was the time that I realize that there are other people and places that exists. I felt like I have been freed from the cage of my ignorance. Once I thought that the only people in the world are my SOS family and the environment in school. My mind was pretty narrow with all sorts of things. Until I was able to meet people from across the globe that has possessed different language, beliefs, traditions and even attitude. From that time, I have loved it. I wanted more. I wanted to discover and explore more. I continued to study until I finished a degree of Bachelor of Arts in English in one of the most competitive University in our region, Leyte Normal University. I was a scholar of the university since I was one of the performers in school. I was a member of Leyte Normal Dance Company. We traveled to different parts of the region to dance and entertain. Since it is also one of my passion. To be watched on the stage and make people happy. Now that I have finish my schooling, I wanted to pursue my greatest passion, to travel, to get out of my comfort zone and become the best person that I should be. I believe that meeting people and going places I have never been, creating new experiences and overcoming fears are the things that cannot be learned in school. In the same time with me getting out of my comfort zone would inspire my SOS siblings to fly and dream even more. I want them to understand that impossibles are very possible if we strive hard and never give up on our dreams.
