My name is Stephen Kilemi, and I am reaching out with a heavy heart, seeking the kindness of people willing to help me escape the harsh realities of living in Ngong Mathare slum, Kenya. As a struggling freelance worker, I am fighting poverty daily, doing everything I can to create a better life for myself. But the challenges of living in a slum are overwhelming. Insecurities are a constant threat. I’ve had to fend off thieves trying to steal my small desktop, which is my only tool to make a living. The environment is harsh—poor sanitation and my iron-sheet house become unbearable during the day due to the extreme heat. I cannot work in such conditions, which limits my ability to secure enough freelance jobs to even survive, let alone improve my situation.
