About Me
Timothy Tsang is a queer Chinese-American dance educator, performer & choreographer. Born in Chicago, IL, Timothy Tsang began his dance journey in Shanghai, China, where he started taking classes in street dance styles at a local studio. After a decade in Shanghai, he returned to the Chicago suburbs to complete high school and obtained his BA in Dance from Columbia College Chicago. This rich experience has granted Tsang a distinctive perspective on various cultures, fostering a deep appreciation for the diverse facets of his own identity. During his time at Columbia College Chicago, Tsang performed original works by Paige Cunningham-Calderella, Bob Eisen, and Stephanie Paul, as well as repertoire by Merce Cunningham. In 2016, Tsang received a commission from Columbia College Chicago to choreograph for its Open House, held at the Auditorium Theatre. He has since performed with various companies in Chicago, including Ardent Dance Company, South Chicago Dance Theatre, Mordine & Company Dance Theater, Dance in the Parks Chicago, The Seldoms, and Mandala Arts. Notably, he has set choreography for Esoteric Dance Project, Mordine & Company Dance Theater, and Evanston Dance Ensemble, presenting his works at venues such as the Auditorium Theatre, Links Hall, Fulton Street Collective, Studio5, and the Edge Theater. Many of Tsang’s choreographic endeavors have centered around inquiries into identity, contributing to a deeper connection with cultural narratives that shape his identity as a queer Chinese-American artist. Currently, Tsang is enrolled at the University of Michigan, actively pursuing an MFA in Dance. His studies focus on exploring the intersections between cultures, identities, and dance, with the goal of further developing a multidisciplinary practice and refining his voice as a Queer Chinese-American artist.
